Thai text to speech works by analyzing the written Thai, deriving the pronunciation of every syllable from the spelling, applying the characteristics of the chosen voice and synthesizing the audio.
Text processing comes first. Thai is written without spaces between words, so the engine segments the sentence itself before anything else, then expands numbers, dates and abbreviations into the words a speaker would say. Pronunciation is derived syllable by syllable: the consonant class, the vowel sign and any tone mark together decide the tone and the vowel length, which is why a tone mark is a pronunciation instruction rather than an accent. The selected voice adds pitch range, timbre and delivery, and the speed setting and punctuation add the pacing. The model generates the waveform from that plan and encodes it as an MP3 or a WAV file.
